Internet access has become a vital necessity in both the business infrastructure and home / workplace environments. Without the internet it is hard to imagine not having the wealth of information and communication facilities it provides. The United Kingdom is fast becoming an "online" nation:
- In the fourth quarter of 2003, 49 per cent households in the UK (12.1 million) could access the Internet from home.
*
- Nearly half of all adults (47 per cent) who had used the Internet in the three months prior to interview used it to buy or order tickets, goods and services.

It therefore appears that the commercial and non-commercial community cannot afford to miss out on the internet users represented by the above statistics. To take advantage of this is simple

Second is the established, slower, analogue connection where a MODEM dials an Internet Service Provider (ISP) and uses your telephone line to establish a connection to the internet. Speeds are a theoretical maximum of 57.6 kbps and you can either "pay as you go" at normal local call charges or pay a fixed monthly fee for a similar price as above, opting to have your calls charges included. This usually works out more expensive than the above ADSL broadband and is effectively 10 times slower, less reliable and requires the user to establish a connection when he/she wishes to access the internet. However, it has provided internet access for individuals and organisations for many years and is available to anyone with a telephone connection.
